Royal Conservatory of Music
Perspectives
Perspectives allows the student to explore the many different types of classical
music that have shaped history. There is an Introductory level
and 10 grade levels with a repertoire book and study book.
The repertoire book is comprised of pieces from the Baroque,
Classical, Romantic and 20th Century periods. The study book also
contains pieces from these periods but are generally chosen because
they they teach a specific technique that is important for that grade
level. Students generally play 3-4 pieces from each list and 3-4
studies. Students also learn scales and other technical
requirements that are specific to their grade level. At the
higher levels Hanon finger exercises are employed to strengthen
the fingers, increase speed and flow, and achieve balance between the hands.
The Royal Conservatroy of Music offers examinations in each grade level
as well as theory examinations. These examinations are a
wonderful learning experience for both students and teachers but are optional.
At Andrea's Music Studio the students have two exam choices, RCM
examinations in Halifax or Acadia Examinations at the studio.
These exams are normally taken in the spring but can be taken
through RCM in the summer and winter as well. All students taking
an examination receive ear-training and sight reading instruction
throughout the year.
Students who are playing the RCM repertoire can easily
add in contemporary pieces as well. Teachers will work with the
student to find the right balance between the Classical and
Contemporary pieces.
