Adaptive Lessons

What are Adaptive Lessons?

Many children with special needs or developmental diagnoses may struggle in a traditional music lesson where the teacher may not have the training to accommodate the child's learning style or adapt the traditional lesson to meet the child's musical needs.  The primary goal of Adaptive Lessons, in contrast to Music Therapy, is to give the child a free and open opportunity to explore musical concepts. In adaptive lessons the teacher approaches the lesson with an open-ended perspective using teacher-directed musical activities.  While learning an instrument may benefit the child in other ways, the teacher is not addressing any treatment goals related to the child's diagnosis.

Adaptive Lessons May Be Best When:

  • ·Your child wants to learn an instrument and has tried traditional lessons, but did not have a successful experience due to behavioural, verbal, cognitive or other barriers that the teacher was unable to work with.
  • ·Your child has received Music Therapy and goals have been met or are in the process of being met, and the parent and therapist agree that the child is now ready for adaptive lessons.

Theory, History & Harmony

Theory is included as part of each student's weekly music lesson.

All students have the opportunity to complete Theory, History and Harmony exams through the Royal Conservatory of Music.

History and Harmony courses will require extra study and lesson time.

Musical Discoveries

A great program for busy kids that want a musical exploration opportunity but don't have the time at home to practice.

Our Goal:

To offer a positive, fun, and interactive learning environment for children to explore a broad range of musical experiences and Discover all of what music as to offer.

The lesson will be facilitated by the teacher and guided by the student’s interest, imagination, and quest for musical knowledge.

Key Areas of Concentration:

Musical genres, artists, instruments: piano/ukulele/ drums/vocals, terminology including notation, techniques, songwriting and composition, creative thinking processes and freedoms, modern music and how it affects us as listeners, and sound making.

In essence, the sky’s the limit with these weekly lessons.  Our curriculum is loosely designed in order to allow the child to flow with the ideas.  The lessons’ weekly objectives are firmly set but the student will be the navigator thus given the opportunity to explore wherever their musical interests take them.

No musical instrument needed at home.  This program is designed for weekly private one-on-one lessons, semi-private lessons, and group lessons but currently only in a private setting due to Covid.

Summer Lessons

Music lessons can continue during the summer months and are a wonderful way to add a bit of learning to the long summer break from school.

These lessons are paid for by term (for July and August) at the start of summer term.

Only select teachers will be teaching lessons during the summer months of July/August. If your teacher will not be teaching over the break it is a great opportunity to learn from another one of our gifted teachers and gain the benefit of their unique musical knowledge and technique.

Summertime is also a great chance to try out a different instrument without taking on the extra practice. Maybe you have always wanted to learn the drums or Ukulele! Here is your chance!
